During the first few weeks of residency for the Bachelor of Arts in Professional Communications program, at Royal Roads University, the forty “learners” in our cohort were thrown the same classroom, Nixon 220, for eight hours a day, five days a  week.  Billions of people are stuck in a public space with forty or more people all day, but add eight to ten hours of homework, for a full year, and you have a sample group of strung out individuals. 

Our cohort coped with the fatigue of deadlines in our own ways. There were mid-morning nappers – and mid-term melt-downers. One of our classmates broke into a rash whenever an exam or project deadline approached; another watched an entire season of Desperate Housewives, and then there were those who missed more classes than they attended. (The following picture would not have happened, if not for someone skipping the graduation ceremony). 

Caffeine became King.  Every member of our cohort (minus maybe two (religious) people) had a protocol for maximum caffeine delivery. Some people bagged their own tea, and used a kettle in class. Many energy drinks were drank, and countless coffee runs were made. One girl even ate coffee ice-cream before class, but only one other fellow in class brought a thermos: Dave.

Dave is unflappable. 

Meeting Mr. Maguire in the first few weeks of class was a relief.  We share a similar taste in music, he always had a hundred hints for my Mac, and somehow he always had an extra cup of coffee left over. Over a year of classes and expresso’s, Dave and I have gotten into heated debates over Tumblr vs Twitter, Wordpress vs. Blogger, and Facebook vs. FriendFeed. 

We have overcome some unreasonable situations, under serious deadlines,  but Dave is always prepared. He delivers quality presentations, and grinds out websites, with confidence in his productions. Dave once taught me that by keeping my thumbs out I will prevent slouching, Oprah’s technique. Ever since he showed me the thumb trick I think of Dave as the “Arthur Fonzarelli” of Wordpress. Heyyyyy!
